There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from next door Thailand, where gambling hall gaming is illegal. Eight casinos are based in a relatively small location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime area, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few restrictions requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; however, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are allegedly needed to pass, there are means around this, as is true of most border crossings.

The first Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship casino, contains 150 one armed bandits and 60 gaming tables. The Naga river boat is open 24 hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 slot machine games and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slots and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the common gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel building that highlights numerous conveniences aside from the casino, which contains ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 one armed bandits and eighty eight table games.
